Frying Pan [flashback, IO, nk]

Post by Kozan on Tue Jan 17, 2017 5:15 pm

"Hmph!"
Raising his arms, Kozan exerted his power, a stark white aura exuding from his body. In a small circle around him, the frozen ground burst into flame as if the heat of suns had been imposed upon it, while the air immediately around Kozan somehow remained cool. Not bad, he thought to himself. Still, he could do better, but he had to be careful. A missed calculation or a single error could end up incinerating the countryside. With another quick pulse, the ground froze again, though it would never be quite the same as before. Underneath the frost, the dormant foliage that had been there before had been scorched away, replaced by dark, seared dirt and rock.

Although Kozan was a Kaguya clan member, he didn't really have much in common with others of his kind. He didn't bother manipulating his bones, preferring wide-scale destruction, which worked most of the time. It had occurred to him to train up once in a while, but the busy schedule of someone of his rank kept him from doing much. All he had time for was the occasional upkeep of what he already knew, especially the mental calculations for "Oblivion". If he ever forgot those and tried to defend himself using entropy, well... better not the think about what might happen.

He probably needed some kind of low-upkeep activity, something that gave him long spurts of time that he could use to train. Brushing his hair out of his eyes, he tried Oblivion again, this time creating thousands of overlapping radii of different energy levels around him, making sure to keep himself safe. This created a cycling system of heat about 25 meters around him, which began to gather clouds. Kozan dispersed the technique before it could create something like a mini-hurricane.

As it was, trying to create weather phenomena with a technique like this was taxing on his body and mind. He put a mental note onto his mental to-do list: "Weather efficiency?" And just like that, the Flower Man of Hyozan had a new project. There were a few other things he wanted to do as well, but he had absolutely no clue how to go about doing them, so this meteorology endeavor would have to suffice for now. He turned, and began walking back to Hyozan. Speaking of flowers, he'd have to decide whether or not some of these new plants he was cultivating were worth keeping... some strains were dangerous, to say the least.

It had been a long time, Garnet thought, since he allowed himself past the village borders to do anything other than slaughter rebels who dared to question the village. It was a grim reminder of the current things, along with the fact that if he continued down this rate he would only recluse further into his village. But how could he get away? Taking upon his head the role of Hyozankage had ended up being a beneficial move for all parties involved, or at least those worth mentioning in his opinion, but now he was starting to feel the true weight of it on his shoulders. With the village almost completely restored, it was about time that he got the mess known as his ninja corps dealt with.

Even now the death count was staggering. Each day they found more corpses, many remarkably intact due to the sheer cold of Iceberg country, and among those some were added to what was being known among hushed circles as the “Frozen Catacombs” to be laid to rest. Of course, those circles soon found themselves being quickly dissolved due to a sudden increase of military activity in their general area, the Hyozankage was not keen on people taking an interest in it. War brought the power hungry and he knew that scavengers would always appear among the corpses in search of whatever powers they might believe be among them. Garnet would not tolerate such people rooting through his own citizens, especially those who had laid down their life for their village. Any who would try otherwise would meet the end of his blade.

He shook himself out of his thoughts, finding his footsteps making a crunch in the snow. Well, not exactly his own footsteps. If one were to attempt to track his footsteps they would be confused to see the tracks of an overly large bird or perhaps a raptor, which might be explained by his current state at the moment. Garnet had to say that of all things he had never expected to shrink as he got older. Perhaps as a side effect from his ever silent tag along he had shrunk a good eight inches within two years and for whatever reason his once bright red eyes were now a golden amber, slowly turning brighter by the day. What was rather concerning to him was why. Was Pharoah trying to influence him, perhaps make his body more suitable for inhabiting? He glanced at his pale white skin, barely able to be told apart from the snow surrounding him. Perhaps that might be the case, at least in color scheme, but certainly not in strength. The fighting, however gruesome it may have been, had hardened Garnet’s resolve and made him stronger, he wouldn’t give way because some big cat tried to bully him out of his body. Anyways, back to those tracks of his.

A big concern among the council with him leaving, despite the short amount of time it was to be for his current task, was that he was not taking any guards with him. He had opted to leave them at the village as he didn’t anticipate any forces moving to take him out with such speed, however enough complaints had been risen that he had seen fit to at least come outfitted for “battle” despite the fact that he didn’t plan to do anything in the slightest. A metal tail wagged lazily in the wind behind him and two larger than limbs metallic limbs sat at rest, sinewy muscles bulging as though they were ready to pounce at any moment. Of course this was merely the look they had always, as was the point of the entire ensemble. Garnet stretched out his real limbs, thankful that the systems were generating enough heat that his exposed midriff wasn’t experiencing any kind of cold due to it. He had to hand it to himself, the Caffeine ensemble had rather effective thus far. Perhaps it was time to create another of it’s kind?

He continued on at a light pace, mentally leafing through the information his scouts had sent him earlier. According to his scouts one of the ANBU operatives- his operatives, he corrected himself- were heading back to Hyozan after the end of a long term mission assigned during the reign of the previous Hyozankage. While he normally would have just nodded at the sound of people returning, deserters weren’t often welcome considering how they had basically left the village to burn unless they had a really good reason, but this one caught his eye for some reason. No, that wasn’t just because of his official ninja files stating his clan lineage or his rank, but it was the attaching clipping of his face that drew him in as a person. Eyes which conveyed intelligence, that could be seen even through the lens of a camera. Hyozankage or not, Garnet had decided that he meet this man in person. He wasn’t one to let opportunities go passing by, if he was he would be dead by now.

This leaves us where he currently was in the fields, trying to estimate how far Kozan may have traveled based on earlier reports. Eventually he found himself in an open field, standing along, scanning the horizon like an idiot to see if he found anything. While he did not see anything, what Garnet found was that he could smell something. Unlike the ever present smell of winter and a sea breeze carried all the way from the ocean, this smelled of fire, ashes, scorched earth. Forest fires simply couldn’t exist in Iceberg, even if lightning were to strike a tree it would often be put out quickly by the natural elements. Such a disturbance could only mean one thing. Walking carefully forward Garnet made a note to more his extra metal limbs away from his current profile, as even when standing still they tended to give off the image of an aggressive stance due to their natural downward tilt. Eventually as he approached the smell he had been able to manipulate them so they folded into each other almost as though they were in prayer behind his back, though in such a way that his tail could still move freely.

Garnet could only look on in wonder from a safe distance, about 30m away, feeling the pure levels of chakra in the air surrounding the figure he assumed to be Kozan due to his appearance matching the picture even from the back. Scanning the ground he was both astonished and intrigued to see it frosted over although if he looked closely this indeed was the same area which he had smelled earlier. Looking again at the ninja he found that he was now standing in his own personal cloud system, which he privately admitted to himself looked pretty cool.

Allowing the ANBU to have his moment, lest he do something rash and blow the both of them up by accident, Garnet’s eyebrow raised slightly at the comment the man made to himself? Weather efficiency? While Garnet had done an investigation before arriving, he hadn’t really bothered to look at his arsenal rather closely and as such was guessing as to what he meant. Perhaps he was of some sort of line which could control the very weather itself? Or was it perhaps his own personal technique? Maybe even based off of the Temperature manipulating abilities of a certain Seven Tailed Sphinx? Again, he was thinking too much.
As Kozan began walking back in the direction of their home Garnet would decide to make his presence a bit more obvious as a small pulse of his excess chakra left his system, a flurry of rose petals fluttering on an unfelt wind through the air before disappearing shortly after. It was a bit cheesy, he admitted it, but it was in the end a family tradition.

“Kozan...Kaguya?” Garnet would state, more of a confirmation than a question in order to start the conversation. if Kozan were to turn around at that moment he would see the pale skinned boy decked out in his full metal attire, his old Iceberg headband wrapped around his neck loosely to show his allegiances for as far as he knew the ANBU didn’t even know of the change in leadership. His head was cocked slightly to the right, his left arm angled slightly and his hand on his hip while his right dangled to the side. Tail waving behind him slightly, almost like a sluggish snake, Garnet would wait silently for Kozan to speak, deciding to give the man initiative in the conversation at the moment in order to gain more of a grasp for who he was dealing with. A picture could speak a thousand words, but this topic had already reached far over that amount after all. Huh, could he really call a meeting a “topic”? Garnet banished these far too meta thoughts in favor of watching for Kozan’s response.

To be honest, Kozan hadn't expected to see anyone out here. Since he'd been gone for a bit, he also wasn't precisely familiar with the person he was talking to. There was this nagging feeling in the back of his brain
"Hmm? Yes, I am he." The truth, of course. He had no reason to lie, especially from someone who was clearly from Hyozan... probably. From his prior experience in the service, he knew not to trust everything he saw. But at least in his mind, he was strong enough to deal with any hidden threats that presented themselves to him.

The wind whistled slightly as the last vestiges of the system he had dispersed earlier finally vanished. Kozan got a pretty good look at who he was talking to. ...A redhead kid? Once again, a small recollection flashed in his mind, but remained beyond his reach. Still, even someone like him couldn't be really expected to remember everyone he ever saw or met. He might be a little smarter than your average civilian, but that didn't mean his memory was photographic by any stretch of the imagination. Still, it looked like this guy had caught him in the act: Kozan usually didn't do any work, and hadn't for quite some time. But for a while now, his flowers had been doing odd things, and it had put him on edge.

He wasn't a superstitious person, but environmental stress factors were an actual thing for plants. If he could just do something about the environment around him, he would be able to set his mind at ease. Well, for the most part. Though, if this was someone who was finally coming after him to tell him that he had some kind of task to perform for the village, it was the end of a very long fever dream for him.

Since the unfortunate incident years ago, he hadn't been the most proactive ninja in the village, something that had just started to eat at his conscious a few weeks back. There was a case to be made that Kozan had started being able to feel guilt again. The fact that he hadn't been contributing much other than really tedious and rather useless missions had started to get on his nerves. One might say that he had entered a sort of old-man's crisis early. The elderly always had a conflict of progression versus stagnation: did they feel like they had done anything useful in their life? In Kozan's case, it was a pretty solid "no".

What was interesting, of course, was this rather odd device that this newcomer seemed to be using. Metal appendages? Could he alter them using a Meissner effect or a denaturation of some kind...? No, that'd probably kill the poor kid. The boy's tissues would be frozen and dead long before he'd start to see any kind of results. Still, it was a little tempting. Would the metal break before its configuration started to change? Or was it more like tin? Only one way to find out, and that way was quite barred to him.

[Sorry for the relatively short post, just wanted to get something substantial in before the 48 hours was up xD]

(Don't worry man, don't feel pressured to hold yourself to standards and whatnot)

In all honesty, Garnet had to admit that even after all these years and his appointment to his current position he still had a bit of trouble interacting with new people. It didn’t matter how much preparation he had beforehand, whenever eh did he couldn’t help but feel butterflies in his stomach as though he had just done something very foolish indeed. It didn’t matter if that were the case or not, it always seemed to happen anyway. Urgh, he really needed to get ahold of himself if he were to get through this situation like a normal human being.

Irregardless, he couldn’t help but look over the man he was talking with, despite knowing who he was at this point. At the moment he seemed to be rather calm, which was the be expected given his ranking, however Garnet was unsure as to how he would react to any information he gave him. Once again, he was regretting having not dug further into Kozan’s file and made a mental note to do so upon his return. Maybe if he did that with any other ninja he came across from his own village he would have the chance to not look like a bumbling idiot. Yes, that sounded like an excellent idea.

Garnet had to admit, he had no idea how Kozan might react to this news? Would he be saddened? Frightened? Angered? He was afraid that he knew absolutely nothing about this man’s temperament besides hunches and that could only bring him so far. Even so, it wasn’t like he could just keep him in the dark. Not only was he far past the point of turning back, but he also owed it to him as a fellow ninja of the Hidden Iceberg. God’s damn him if he didn’t give him the proper respect for it.

Garnet’s tail wiggled a bit, an unconscious sign of him being the slightest bit uncomfortable as he scratched his left arm with his right hand. Alright, enough of this inane thinking. “Pretty decent weather we’re having, huh?” He said in an admittedly lame way before gesturing with the same hand he had been scratching with previously to the sky. While decent might be based on perspective, Garnet at this point considered anything that wasn’t a full on blizzard to be decent weather. Once again, he was getting of track. He sighed.

“Sorry, I’m procrastinating.” He said. “I’ll cut to the chase now. Anyways…” he paced about a meter to his left. “You’ve been gone for a while. Now, before you jump to conclusions and think that I’m coming here to declare you a deserter,” He held up his hands as though to signal his lack of guilt. “I’m not. I get that you had your own missions and likely personal reasons.” He lowered his hands to his sides again.

“However,” he continued. “I’m afraid that I come as the bearer of mixed news. During your absence there was a...rebellion. It was bloody, destruction all across the village. Nobody could escape its effects.” He would wait a few seconds for this to sink in, allowing Kozan time to think and process as per his own courtesy. “I’m sorry to tell you that most of our higher ups perished in the initial attack. The previous Hyozankage and Sannin have been dead for about a year now along with almost all of those who previously held top positions.”

Here he would pause once again, inviting a response from the other ninja should he chose to do so. Even for ANBU, who he knew tended to be a bit removed from the village as a whole due to their position, he was sure that it might be a bit hard to believe that the previous powerhouses of the village were now gone. Heck, he was still having trouble himself yet he stared at the reminder in his mirror every single day. Swinging his arms slightly out of awkwardness, he voiced one last comment. “Err, sorry, but is it okay if I come a little closer? The distance makes it kind of hard to hold a conversation. I promise I won’t bite.” He clamped his mouth shut to convey the message further, just in case.

A long, interminable pause. Seconds stretched to minutes, minutes to what felt like almost hours. But no response. It was odd. Garnet could understand taking a minute to digest the information, but this? It was almost worryingly long. He examined the man before him. Not a single move, not even a twitch. It was even as though the man had ceased to breath. Wait a minute.

Oh, no.

Moving towards the man he found that not even a single plume of air escaped from Kozan’s mouth, as though he had ceased to be in that very moment. Tentatively he raised his hands, putting them to the man’s neck. No pulse. A surge of loss flowing through him. What a tragedy. Had he died, perhaps, of the shock? Was he responsible? All these questions, but it seemed that now was not the time anymore.

Gently raising the man’s body so that he could carry him, which was easy enough despite his small frame due to his strength, he would walk back to his village with a heavy heart. It seemed that he had some losses to report.
